Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning to summer. This year will look a lot different for Americans as we won’t be heading out to the beaches or backyard picnics. Maybe that is a good thing as we pause and take a look at the real meaning behind this holiday.
The last Monday of May is set aside to observe and remember those men and women who have died while serving in the US military. Our freedoms have come at a price. It has cost many men and women their lives, shattering their families’ hopes and dreams as they struggle to navigate a new way of life.
I don’t know about you, but I have been given a new appreciation for freedom. As we have lost many freedoms over the past 3 months due to a virus. Basic freedoms that we have taken for granted over the course of a lifetime. Who would have thought that the freedom to grab a cup of coffee with a friend, to have a dinner party or worship our Savior with fellow believers would be taken away for a time?
Freedom is sweet, it is to be savored. Our freedom was bought with a price, may we never forget that. As we celebrate Memorial Day may we be mindful of the sacrifice’s others have given for our freedom. If you know of a family who has lost someone while fighting for you and me, thank them today!
